Drop Forging horseshoes represents the optimal and unparalleled method for making the strongest and highest quality horseshoes; let us share with you why.

Pitching Horseshoes are typically manufactured in one of two methods:

  • “Casting” uses molten metal that is poured into forms shaped like a horseshoe and then cooled. The micro structure of the metal stays undifferentiated (think particle board). Casting is relatively inexpensive and cast parts are often decorative or non-critical, where part failure (breakage) is non-catastrophic.
  • zoom.jpgThe other method, called “Forging,” moves beyond casting by working metal into a pre-form to produce an oriented fibrous grain structure in the steel (think oak wood). This pre-form is then hammer or “drop” Forged in horseshoe shaped dies that further refines the metal’s internal grain flow to conform to the horseshoe shape throughout the shoe. With the more involved process, Forging is a more expensive method but the overall end result is a far superior product with exceptional integrity and structural/impact/directional strength. Products manufactured by forging include critical aircraft parts, structural components for transportation equipment, and hand tools, to name a few. Because part failure (breakage) has the potential to be catastrophic in the industries mentioned, only the best “gold-standard” process is acceptable – Forging.

All pitching horseshoes were originally forged because the original “horse shoe” (for the horse) was a forged item, which, out of necessity for quality, it continues to be to this day. Over time, however, with the increased cost of forging, the pitching horseshoe market has been moving away from Forging in favor of the less expensive casting method. The trade-off for cheaper horseshoes is increased breakage of cast horseshoes and altered designs resulting in a bulky “feel” of once popular forged horseshoe models, and in many cases, not much of the cost savings have made it to the user. The elusive goal the casting method is the attempt to draw near the gold-standard of quality Forging but at a lower cost.

At Omega Horseshoes we have remained true to the forging process that has defined the Gordon Horseshoe since its inception in the 1920's. We have gone to great lengths to ensure our horseshoes are manufactured with the needs of the dedicated horseshoe pitcher in mind (you): a shoe that has the superior internal strength to last ringer after ringer after ringer that is free of internal voids and impurities while remaining affordably priced.

Our high-quality Drop Forged Steel Horseshoes are precisely tempered for a medium-soft rating to resist bounce off from the stake and to also minimize burring.  The stake grabbing hooks are hardened to hold their shape and withstand years of wear and tear as you throw more and more Ringers.
